What Does It Mean to be an International Student in an Asynchronous Learning Environment
If you have an open heart and open mind this workshop is for you! Through student-centred learning, gain a better understanding and learn how to better connect to students with diverse cultural and linguistic challenges in an asynchronous teaching and learning environment. By understanding what it means to be an international student, by understanding who we are teaching, we gain more insight into how to better support international students as they engage with asynchronous learning. They enrich our teaching and learning experiences as we enrich theirs.
Workshop Goal
By the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to better understand the experiences of international students; gain insight around who they are teaching and how the cultural and linguistic challenges impact course outcomes. Learn about and share strategies to create a sense of community online - specifically with international students; the importance of clear communication and student-centred learning, while respecting our own work life balance, mental health & well being.
By the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to better understand how to support international students through the possible cultural/societal/self-induced pressures of academic performance expectations from family, having to work while in school, having to balance course loads, while adapting to a western educational environment and managing culturally-related learning differences as well as how to seek help. In particular around Academic Integrity including 3rd party tools, citations and referencing - specifically APA7.
