Happy Birthday Mum

Today was my Mum’s birthday.

We headed down to JC Beach - Golden Fleece Beach and had our own little puja. Rohan shared some thoughts, then each of us took a turn pouring Mum’s ashes into the Atlantic accompanied by a mango leaf and some flowers. My Mum loved Richmond. She left to give Rohan and I a better life. I can see that on this trip. I think my children see it too. I wanted them to understand what was left so they could live the life they live now.

Afterwards we went to Richmond to see the store and Mum’s home. I think her first and only true love. It was one of those moments where your body doesn’t quite know what to feel. I remember the veranda and riding my tricycle along it. I remember the long florescent lights and the huge centipedes.

My Mum took a way out. Turned out not to be the best route however, today, I looked at her grand children and her great grand child and I realised Aruni was brilliant, a woman ahead of her time.

Thank you Mum. Happy Birthday.
